Ping is an iOS App (later for Android) that will turn your email into a stream of messages similar to a chat service like iMessage on your iPhone.
There are a handful of apps on the market currently, doing their best to dominate the mobile email space – the Ping App is the most recent attempt to modernize your email experience.
When you email someone who is not using Ping, the app is just a normal email client. It allows you to set notifications, defer messages, and search your inbox. It’s when you email a fellow Ping user that it gets interesting. Ping switches into instant messaging mode which also allows you to make video calls.
Not everyone wants to have an instant chat when they send an email but the fact that it is only a mobile app at the moment suggests that Ping is targeting the less professional email users. The number of business emails sent from mobile devices is increasing significantly but sending instant messages hasn’t quite reached the professional level of an email with a well designed mobile email signature.
Another feature of Ping is that following a chat on the app, when you next go into your inbox, all of the messages will have converted back to emails.
The app was due to be launched on September 18th but you need to register on the website to join the queue – there is 38,681 people in front of me. Let me know where you are on the queue!
