Google has just released Inbox. From the same people who brought you Gmail, but it’s completely different, “designed to focus on what really matters”. Google Inbox is intended to coexist with Gmail. We’ll see how that goes.
Here are some key features of the new email product:
Bundles: stay organized
Google Inbox expands upon the categories from Gmail, allowing you to deal with similar types of mail all at once. For example, all your purchase receipts or bank statements can be grouped together. You can teach Inbox to adapt to the way you work by choosing which emails you’d like to see grouped together.
Highlights: the important info at a glance
Inbox highlights the key information from important messages, such as flight itineraries, event information, and photos and documents. Inbox can also display useful information from the web that wasn’t in the original email, such as the real-time status of your flights and package deliveries. Highlights and Bundles work together to give you just the information you need at a glance.
Reminders, Assists, and Snooze:
Inbox lets you add reminders, this can be anything that you choose. This will essentially allow you to stop using a second reminder app like the one built into iOS and track everything from one app.
Assists work for your email, too. If you make a reservation online, Inbox adds a map to your confirmation email. Or if you book a flight, Inbox will give you a link to check-in.
Google Inbox also gives you the ability to Snooze emails and Reminders, there’s no rush to do things right now. You can set them to come back at a more suitable time or when you get to a specific location, again very similar to the Apple Reminders app.
Currently, access to Google Inbox is by ‘invite only’. Now is the time to hound your friends for a favour, or you can request an invite from email@example.com. But who knows how long that will take.
The app is available on Android as well as iOS, and the Web (but only Google Chrome for now).
