A colleague of Lynn’s approached me with the idea of reviewing the ebook for our blog – I’m glad I did. Was there a particular reason why you decided to write the ebook?
I chose this topic because when I first came back to work after being out of the workplace for awhile, email was new to me, I didn’t know how to do it professionally. I made some mistakes along the way that I think other people can learn from. The more I used email professionally, the better I became at it. As the communications officer for a large local school district, I also became quite proficient at using kindness and professionalism in emails along the whole spectrum of people I communicated with and I found it really made a difference. As a person who receives email all the time, I know that there are emails that could have been written in a way that addressed me more kindly, more professionally, that would have gotten the relationship off to a better start.
How has the book gone so far? (Jan 22nd, 2015)
So far, 73 ebooks have been purchased at an average price of $9.03.
How do you communicate internally at Miles and Co?
A few months ago, we drastically reduced our email traffic by switching to Slack for inter-office communication, and we love it. We now use email, Skype and Go To Meeting for communicating with clients.
Some people have the opinion that email is dead. What’s your opinion on that?
I don’t think email’s going away. People talk about various forms of social media coming or going, being valuable or not. I believe email is going to be with us for the foreseeable future. People need to know how to do it well.

United Way of Champaign County (Illinois, US) is an non-profit organization that brings people and resources together to create positive change and lasting impact for the community where I live. The programs they fund are smart and data driven to achieve results in areas of health, education, financial stability and emergency service. I worked there for several years, and honed my email skills while there!
